Last August, leading Korean K-Beauty brand Riman Korea announced a partnership with CJ Biomaterials. In line with its mission to create eco-friendly solutions, Riman developed new product packaging made from natural materials.
Riman's Global Sustainable Value Collaboration
Sharing with reporters, Ms. Betty Perez, General Director of Riman in North America, said, “With the goal of reducing the negative impacts of plastic waste over the past decades, our company is committed to implementing environmental protection measures with sustainable solutions. One of them is applying technology to produce packaging from biodegradable plastic (PHA) that is completely derived from nature.”

According to Riman, the products that will be receiving the “new look” campaign are all from the high-end skincare brand Incellderm, specifically: Active Cream EX, Dermatology First Package Booster EX and Vieton Oil Mist. Notably, the above products alone account for 5.4 million annual sales of the company.
After the successful conversion, Riman expects this to be the start of a plan to expand the sustainable, environmentally friendly technology to all other product lines in the near future. In the long term, Riman and CJ Biomaterials are considering expanding their cooperation to develop 100% PHA solutions for product injection molding applications.

“For Riman, sustainability is not just a short-term goal, but an important part of our values in our journey to become a leading personal health care company on a global scale,” added Betty Perez, CEO of Riman North America.
Reform from the monopoly value itself
At Riman, the brand philosophy always focuses on natural, absolutely benign ingredients in each care product. Possessing a long history of technological achievements and patented exclusive ingredients, now, the PHA packaging material conversion process is no exception in the sustainable values that Riman pursues.
In another development, Incellderm's new packaging is a groundbreaking combination of proprietary PHA and PLA materials from manufacturer CJ Biomaterials, a division of South Korea-based CJ CheilJedang.
CJ Biomaterials uses sugarcane-derived sucrose to produce PHA raw material at its 5,000-ton/year plant in Pasuruan, Indonesia. Currently, CJ Biomaterials is the only manufacturer in the world that produces amorphous PHA, which has more optimal properties, is softer and more flexible.
At the same time, it is a home-compostable plastic, which is superior to other PHA plastics. Therefore, as a modifier, it can be used to increase the bio-based content and accelerate the biodegradation process. The company produces PHA under the brand name PHACT, which stands for 'PHA + Action'.

“This partnership with Riman demonstrates the versatility of our PHA bioplastics and reinforces CJ Biomaterials’ commitment to reducing plastic waste and the world’s dependence on petroleum technology,” said Max Senechal, CJ Biomaterials’ Chief Commercial Officer.
